Field Hockey Posts 5-3 Victory Over Bay Path

BOSTON, Mass. -- Lead by freshman forward Katelyn Frade's two goals, the Wheelock College field hockey team posted a 5-3 conference win over Bay Path University this evening at Winsor Field.

The Wheelock Wildcats put three consecutive points on the board early in the first half, but Bay Path was able to answer back with two goals to end the half and another in the second half to even the score at three.

Katelyn Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) opened the scoring for Wheelock, firing in a long shot from the top right side of the circle fifteen minutes in. Just over a minute later the Wheelock tally would double to two as sophomore midfielder Emma Panto (Somers, Conn.) was able to convert a helper from junior forward Elizabeth Cooper (Mansfield, Mass.). Assisting the third and final Wheelock goal of the half was Cooper again, slipping the ball to freshman midfielder Alex LeBlanc (Atkinson, N.H.) on a penalty corner.

The first to put Bay Path on the board was freshman forward Nicole Schafer, putting the ball in after a scramble in front of the Wheelock net. Freshman defender Casey LaMotte lifted the BPU score to two, after using an assist from senior midfielder Katherine Chabot that took place as the clock ran out in the first half.

Chabot earned her first goal of the season in the second half, dumping in the rebound off the pads of Nicole Miranda (Westbrook, Maine) on another penalty corner.

Scoring her first goal of the season and lifting Wheelock to a 4-3 lead was freshman midfielder Kennelya Ellis (Stoughton, Mass.), after making a connection with sophomore midfielder Courtney Scherer (Pawcatuck, Conn.).

Frade found the back of the net to seal the Wheelock victory in the 61st minute after utilizing a cross from Panto.

Freshman defender Nicole Kirby (Harwich, Mass.) played solid defensively, earning a defensive save in the second half.

Miranda earned her third victory of the season between the pipes, stopping 6 shots. Junior goalkeeper Anna Meyer turned aside 9 shots for Bay Path.

Wheelock returns to action this Thursday at 7:00pm when they take on Johnson and Wales University. Bay Path plays Thursday as well, travelling to Anna Maria College at 4:00pm.
