Early Pressure by Wildcats Not Enough Against Green Mountain

Early Pressure by Wildcats Not Enough Against Green Mountain

POULTNEY, Vt. – Green Mountain College men's soccer team registered three unanswered second half goals to earn their first win of the season against Wheelock College on Sunday afternoon at Eagles Game Field.

How It Happened: Wheelock (0-7) opened the scoring in the 8th minute as Ian Sobral (Sao Paolo, Brazil) took the ball just outside the final third and maneuvered through open space and ripped home a shot from just outside the 18-yard box beating the Eagles' keeper low and right.

Green Mountain (1-5) thought it had rallied to tie the score at 1-1 when Cameron Book (Poultney, Vt.) knocked home a loose ball from right on the goal's door step, but the goal was called back as the team was offside after a meeting of the officials.

The Eagles finally broke through in the 49th minute after pressuring Wheelock offensively. Book made up for the goal called back in the first half by depositing his first goal of the season from a pass by Brandon Bellissimo (Chicago, Ill.). Book then did one better and notched another goal from an excellent strike off a set piece that curled around the wall and into the top right corner of the net from the left side of the 18-yard box.

Bellissimo gave the Eagles some insurance in the 67th minute when he was sent in towards goal from Lucas Krauss (West Rupert, Vt.) and took a touch to settle it before depositing a low liner into the lower left of the net past a diving keeper.

The Wildcats led the Eagles in shots 18-16.

Who Stood Out: Ian Sobral scored his fourth goal of the season on four total shots and two on the goal keeper.  Freshman Pasulayman Sowe (Lynn, Mass.) recorded three shots and two on goal.

What It Means: The Wildcats are looking to return home after facing a tough road schedule and playing away from home in three of the last four games.

Up Next: Wheelock returns home to face NECC rival Elms College on Saturday (4:00 p.m./Wheelock Live Streaming).
