CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Senior Sara Buscemi (Arlington, MA) scored a pair of runs and stole two bases to help lead the Wheelock College softball team in a pair of losses to Newbury College this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference twinbill at PMC Softball Field on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Nighthawks took the opening contest, 8-0, and the nightcap, 15-2 to improve to 12-11 overall and 6-2 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 0-15 and 0-8.

Buscemi was 1-2 in the second game with two runs scored, a walk and also stole two bases for Wheelock.  She was one of seven Wildcats to collect a hit on the day.  Sophomore catcher Molly Rose (Weymouth, MA) knocked in a run and was 1-2 in game two, while freshman Kayla Grosso (Barnstable, MA) also drove in a run with a single.  Senior first baseman Jacky Hull (Braintree, MA) cracked a double and senior Kim Perault (Medford, MA) reached base safely twice with a walk and a single.

Wheelock broke into the scoring column first in game two when Buscemi reached on a single, was pushed to second following a Perault walk and stole third, where Rose brought her home with a ground out.

Newbury answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Freshman catcher Alyssa Donovan (West Haven, CT) opened the home half lacing a double into the left-center field gap. Freshman center fielder Sheri Liggiero (Tewksbury, MA) knotted the ball game at one, ripping a hard line drive to left field to bring home a run. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Liggiero gave the Nighthawks a 2-1 edge, coming into score on an error. Two batters later, senior pitcher Rebecca Roach (Charlton, MA) helped her own cause with an RBI double to left-center for the third Newbury run of the inning and take a 3-1.

The Nighthawks batted around an inning later to score five runs, keyed by Roach's first career grand slam to take an 8-1 lead.  The Wildcats got a run back in the top of the third when Buscemi worked a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a Rose single and scampered home on a single by Grosso to cut the deficit to 8-2.

Newbury tacked on a run in the bottom of the third and scored six more times in the fourth, paced by two-run singles from Liggiero and junior Katie Haney (Winchendon, MA).

Roach went the distance from the pitching circle for the Nighthawks, allowing just two runs on seven hits while fanning three in five innings of work.  Freshman hurler Kiersten Cosgrove (Pequannock, NJ) tossed three and a third innings for Wheelock.

Roach was outstanding in game one for Newbury, setting down all 15 Wildcats she faced in order, while striking out seven in five innings.

The Nighthawks jumped on the scoreboard early in game one, pushing across two runs to take a 2-0 lead.  After reaching on a fielder's choice, Liggiero got herself into scoring position swiping both second and third before coming into score two batters later on a ground ball by Haney. Later in the inning, freshman first baseman Amber Rapchun (Corona, CA) drove in her fellow California native sophomore shortstop Anjelina Mayjoffo (Antioch, CA) with a single to put the Nighthawks up 2-0.  Newbury scored twice in every inning, which was more than enough support for Roach to earn her fifth victory of the season.

Wheelock will be in action again on Saturday, April 13 when it faces NECC foe Lesley University in a doubleheader to be played at 12:00 p.m. in Weston, MA on the campus of Regis College, while the Nighthawks return to diamond on the same day when they face NECC foe Becker College in Leicester, MA at 12:00 p.m.
