Softball Takes on Pittsburgh-Bradford, Rivier at Gene Cusic Classic

NAPLES, Fla. - Today the Wheelock College softball team continued their Florida trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with games against the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Rivier University.

Early in the morning, the Wildcats faced off against the Panthers of UPB at North Collier Park. Freshman pitcher Hanna Gootee (Hampton, N.H.) kept the game close through the first two innings as Wheelock entered the third trailing 2-0. However, the Panthers broke the contest open in the third with a four run frame. UPB would pile on seven more runs before Wheelock brought two home on a single by senior Maggie Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) for a final 13-2 tally.

The Wildcats were led by Doyle who was 1-for-2 with that two RBI base knock. Sophomore Dominique DelBene (Peabody, Mass.) went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored while senior Brianna Hochwarter (Attleboro, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with a run. Gootee took the loss in the circle after three innings of work.

The Panthers featured nine players with at least one hit, led by sophomore Grace Dadzaa (Grove City, Pa.) who was 2-for-2 with an RBI, two walks, and three runs scored. Classmate Liz Dzurisin (Parma, Ohio) also crossed the plate three times while Maddy Hillery (West Seneca, N.Y.) had a team-best two RBI. Junior Cassidy Lewis (Bolivar, N.Y.) earned the win with a complete game, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six.

UPB improved to 2-3.

Wheelock's second contest featured Rivier University who also made the trip to Florida from New England. In a pitchers' duel, Doyle faced off against Raiders sophomore Kerri Hegarty (Tewksbury, Mass.). Through six innings, only one run had crossed the plate when Rivier sophomore Jessica Silva (Tewksbury, Mass.) drove in a run on a double to center. While the Wildcats threatened with runners on first and second in the second and sixth innings, they were unable to push a run across.

In the top of the seventh, the Raiders earned some breathing room when rookie Kasey Smith (Hopkinton, N.H.) tripled home a run and senior Shaylyn Freitas (Pelham, N.H.) scored on a passed ball. Wheelock went down in order in the bottom of the frame as Rivier won 3-0.

The Wildcats were led by junior Lacey Allen (Gloucester, Mass.) and Gootee who each went 2-for-3 at the dish. Doyle hurled a complete game allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) while striking out one.

Smith and Freitas each had multi-hit games for the Raiders while Smith added an RBI and a run scored. Hegarty pitched a complete game shutout in the circle, allowing five hits and striking out four.

Rivier moves to 2-3 while Wheelock falls to 0-4.

Wheelock returns to action on Friday when they round out their Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic schedule against Mount Mary at 11:00 a.m. and Dominican (Ill.) at 1:00 p.m.
