CLERMONT, Fla. - The Wheelock Softball team opened up their season with two games in Clermont, Florida at the PFX Games. The Wildcats dropped both games on the day, with New England College (NEC) defeating Wheelock 11-1 in five innings and Nebraska Wesleyan beating the Wildcats 14-0.
NEC 11, WHEELOCK 1 (5 INNINGS)
The Pilgrims received three hits from Rachel Kerrigan (Hyde Park, Mass.) and two from Yesenia Dominguez (Symlar, Calif.) en route to the victory. Gabriella Marcheschi (St. James, N.Y.) pitched a five-inning game and gave up just four hits while striking out seven.
Wheelock senior Rachael Simpson (Littleton, Mass.) went two for three from the plate with a double in the bottom of the second inning. Hanna Gootee (Hampton, N.H.) recorded the only RBI for the Wildcats when she reached on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning.
NEB. WESLEYAN 15, WHEELOCK 0 (5 INNINGS)
Simpson finished the day going three for five in the two games, while going one for two against Nebraska Wesleyan. The Wildcats' pitcher, Kathy Ochoa (El Paso, Texas) came in on a relief assignment and pitched 1.2 innings and gave up only two hits.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats have a double-header on Monday at the PFX Games. The first game is against Eastern Nazarene College at 11:00 a.m. and the second game is against Simpson College at 3:00 p.m.
