CLERMONT, Fla. - Wheelock softball opened up Day 2 of the PFX Games in Clermont, Florida with a 12-0 loss against Eastern Nazarene College on Monday.
EASTERN NAZARENE 12, WHEELOCK 0 (5 INNINGS)
The Wildcats reached base in four out of five innings, but were unable to cross homeplate against Eastern Nazarene. Hanna Gootee (Hampton, N.H.) recorded a single in the bottom of the first inning to get the Wildcats on base. The top of the order led the Wildcats with three hits, including hits from Samantha Leahon (Castleton, N.Y.), Gootee, and a double from Taylor McDonald (Weare, N.H.). Second baseman and relief pitcher Kathy Ochoa (El Paso, Texas) recorded a hit in the fourth inning and moved to relief pitcher in the bottom of the fifth to retire the only batter she faced to end the inning. Starting pitcher McDonald struck out three batters on the day.
Senior Rachel Simpson (Littleton, Mass.) is batting .429 with a slugging percentage of .571.
SIMPSON COLLEGE 11, WHEELOCK 0 (5 INNINGS)
Ochoa notched her second hit of the day with a base hit in the top of the fourth inning when she singled to the short stop and was able to beat the throw to first. Gootee reached base twice in the game with a walk in the first inning and a single to left field in the third. Following the single, Simpson was hit by a pitch and after a wild pitch, the Wildcats were threatening with runners on the corners.
UP NEXT: Wheelock squares off against the College of Saint Elizabeth (N.J.) at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday and will face Finlandia University (Mich.) at 11:30 a.m. in Claremont, Florida in the Wildcats' third day of competition at the PFX Games.
