REVERE, Mass. - The Wheelock Softball team hosted a doubleheader against the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Newbury College. The Nighthawks were able to sweep the double header with both games going five innings.
GAME ONE - NEWBURY 17, WHEELOCK 0 (5 INNINGS)
Newbury College used power throughout the game to record 17 runs on 19 hits, including three homeruns. Hannah Besaw (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pitched five innings with five strikeouts and only allowing 4 hits. Besaw managed to help herself by going 4-for-4 from the plate with two homeruns and five RBIs. Averi Johnson (Oregon City, Ore.) added a homerun of her own in the top of the fifth inning.
The top of the order was strong for the Wildcats, with each of the top three batters recording a hit. Wheelock put pressure on the Nighthawks early in the game by advancing runners to second and third with two outs. Newbury's pitcher Besaw was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.
GAME TWO - NEWBURY 14, WHEELOCK 3 (5 INNINGS)
Newbury took the second game with a final score of 14-3 to complete the sweep. The teams battled in the first inning with the Nighthawks scoring four runs in the top of the inning on five hits, while the Wildcats scored two runs on three hits including a double to center field by Samantha Leahon (Castleton, N.Y.) to lead off the inning. Shannon Creedon (Woodstock, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with two singles to lead the Wildcats in batting.
The Newbury pitcher Besaw pitched three innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to record the win. Relief pitcher Mallory Stefan (Thornton, Colo.) pitched two innings allowing no runs on two hits, with two strikeouts. Besaw improved to 4-0 for the season.
