BENNINGTON, VT - Junior forward Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA) registered her first double-double of the year with season highs of 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Wheelock College women's basketball team in a 66-28 loss at Southern Vermont College in the New England Collegiate Conference opener tonight in Bennington, VT. The Wildcats fall to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Mountaineers improve to 2-4 and 1-0.
Milton also added two blocks, a pair of steals and an assist to her evening for Wheelock. Senior center Jo Gomes (Boston, MA) contributed with six points and six rebounds, while junior guard Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, MA) chipped in with six points and four rebounds.
Despite trailing, 43-7, at halftime, the Wildcats regrouped and were outscored by just two points in the second half. Southern Vermont netted the first four points of the period to take a 51-7 advantage, but Wheelock went on a torrid 16-2 run, fueled by six points apiece from Milton and McCaffrey, to close to within 53-23 with 8:55 remaining in the game. Milton later scored the final four points of the contest for the Wildcats.
The Mountaineers had three players in double figures as Joa Claircius (Clermont, FL) led the way with 19 points. Ashliy Veliz (Glendale, CA) contributed with 12 points, but the play of senior point guard Sherrita Hall set the tempo. Hall had 10 points and four assists in order to control the SVC offense.
Wheelock returns to action when it plays Pine Manor College at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA, normally the Wildcats home surface, on Thursday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m., while Southern Vermont travels to Northfield, VT on December 8 to play Norwich University at 7:00 p.m.
