McCaffrey Scores Career-High Point Total for Women's Basketball at Pine Manor
CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Junior guard Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, MA) netted a career-high nine points and added six rebounds for the Wheelock College women's basketball team tonight in a 61-39 loss to host Pine Manor College at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Wildcats fall to 0-7 on the season, while the Gators improve to 4-3.
McCaffrey also made a three-pointer, came up with two steals and dished out an assist for Wheelock, while sophomore guard Jessica Ramsey (Milford, MA) came off the bench to score 10 points, grab three rebounds, make a pair of steals and block a shot. Senior forward Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT) turned in a solid effort with seven points, nine rebounds and two steals and classmate Jo Gomes (Boston, MA) also chipped in with seven points to go with eight rebounds and a steal. Junior forward Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA) led all players on the glass, pulling down 18 rebounds in addition to scoring six points, coming up with three steals and handing out an assist. The Wildcats owned a 50-38 rebounding margin for the game.
Pine Manor raced out to a 19-2 lead in the first 12 minutes of the contest, but Wheelock came alive with seven straight points, capped by a Ramsey three-pointer at the 4:46 mark of the opening half to pull the visitors to within 19-9. The Gators held off the Wildcats' charge for the remainder of the half and took a 29-11 advantage into the locker rooms.
Pine Manor later owned a 43-13 lead following a layup from junior forward Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA) with 15:07 showing in the second half, but Wheelock reeled off five straight points in a 44-second span to make it 43-18. The Gators later opened up their largest lead of the night at 56-21 with 8:46 to go in the game, but the Wildcats scored nine unanswered points, including six from Milton, to close to within 56-30. Wheelock closed out the contest by scoring nine of the final 14 points, fueled by six points from McCaffrey, including a three-pointer with 23 ticks left on the clock.
Senior guard Yiafia Dowridge (White Plains, NY) led Pine Manor with a game-high 15 points and added two rebounds, a steal and an assist, while senior guard Phibe Pham (Boston, MA) came off the bench to drop in 14 points in addition to three steals and a pair of assists. Sophomore guard Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH) led all denders with 10 steals and added six points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The Wildcats will be in action again on Saturday, December 10 when they host Bay Path College in a New England Collegiate Conference match-up at 2:00 p.m. at Brunelli Court, while the Gators travel to Annandale-on-Hudson, NY on December 11 to take on Bard College at 3:00 p.m.
