Milton Records Ninth Double-Double for Women's Basketball vs. Newbury
CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Junior forward Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA) posted her team-leading ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Wheelock College women's basketball team in a 65-45 loss to visiting Newbury College in a New England Collegiate Conference contest tonight at Brunelli Court on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Wildcats fall to 3-17 overall and 3-11 in NECC play, while the Nighthawks win their third straight game to improve to 12-9 and 10-4.
Milton added four steals and three assists for Wheelock as well. Senior forward Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT) ended the night with 12 points on 5-6 from the floor and a perfect 2-2 from the line and added four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while sophomore guard Jessica Ramsey (Milford, MA) chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a block.
Milton converted a fast break layup with 17:10 to play in the second half and pull the Wildcats to within 28-25. Wheelock later stayed within 36-32 with 13:38 showing in the second stanza, before the Nighthawks put together a 16-6 run, paced by six points from senior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, MA), to take a 52-38 advantage with 6:16 to go in the contest. Drescher later canned a jumper to cut the deficit to 56-44 with four minutes remaining for the Wildcats, but Newbury closed out the game by scoring nine of the final 10 points, including seven from freshman guard Nephie Nash (Brockton, MA).
The Nighthawks owned a 12-8 lead midway through the first half at the 10:14 mark, following a layup from Wheelock senior center Jo Gomes (Boston, MA/Newton Country Day), but a 7-2 burst game them their largest margin of the half at 19-10 with 6:44 to play in the period. Drescher later hit another jumper to bring the Wildcats to within 21-16 at the 3:07 mark, before Newbury took a 24-18 halftime lead.
Marsh finished 7-14 from the field to score a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds, four assists and a game-high four steals for the Nighthawks, while sophomore forward Katie Haney (Winchendon, MA) netted 14 points, grabbed seven boards, came up with a pair of steals and handed out an assist. Junior center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA) registered a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds in addition to four assists, three blocks and a pair of steals.
The Wildcats will be in action again on Thursday, February 9 when they travel to Leicester, MA to take on NECC foe Becker College at 6:00 p.m., while Newbury hosts Regis College on the campus of Hellenic College on the same night at 5:00 p.m.
