Ferrante, Gavin Lead Women's Lacrosse over Mitchell, 25-4
NEW LONDON, CT - Junior attacker Valerie Ferrante (Milford, MA) tallied a career and game-high nine points, including five goals and classmate Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA) netted a game-high eight goals, including the 100th of her career to lead the Wheelock College women's lacrosse team to a 25-4 road victory over host Mitchell College this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference contest at Alumni Field in New London, CT. The victory is the first career coaching win for the Wildcats mentor, Meghan Griffin, and improves Wheelock's record to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Mariners fall to 1-4 and 1-2.
Wheelock owned a 36-16 shot advantage in the match.
Gavin becomes the first player in school history to notch 100 career scores just two weeks after recording her 100th career point. She now has 115 lifetime points as the school's career leader. Gavin and Ferrante were two of six players with multiple points on the day for the Wildcats. Freshman midfielder Haley Lary (Randolph, VT) racked up a career-best four points on three goals and a helper to go with a game-high five ground balls, while senior middie Christina Cubera (Baltimore, MD) and junior midfielder Molly Centore (Kennebunk, ME) each scored a pair of goals and added an assist, respectively. Junior attacker Emma Marrs (Old Lyme, CT) returned to the lineup to register two points with a goal and an assist.
Wheelock scored three times in the opening 2:06 of the contest to jump out to a quick lead. Ferrante notched her first of the day just 13 seconds in, and Lary and Gavin scored goals just 23 seconds apart to make it 3-0.
Mitchell finally got on the scoreboard at the 26-minute mark when freshman Ashley Murtha (South Windsor, CT) fought her way through traffic and netted a shorthanded goal. After the Wildcats went up 4-1 on a score by Centore, the Mariners responded with back-to-back goals from Murtha and freshman Amanda Rowan (Sandy Hook, CT) to make it a game at 4-3 with 24:07 remaining.
That would be as close as it would get, however, as Wheelock scored 15 of the final 16 goals in the half to lead 19-4 at the break. Gavin scored three straight times to spark the offense and scored a total of seven goals in the stanza.
Wheelock shut Mitchell out in the second half and added six goals to pad the lead. Marrs and freshman attacker Emily Hammerstrom (West Boylston, MA) each netted their first goals of the season as the Wildcats scored twice with a player advantage to start the half.
Gavin's final goal came with 6:30 left and bumped her team-leading total to 21 on the season. The eight goals tied for the fourth most ever scored by a Wheelock player in a single game, a category in which Gavin now owns the top four spots in school history.
Wheelock goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, ME) recorded seven saves to earn her first collegiate win. Mitchell's Anysia Lombardo (South Windsor, CT) made six stops in goal in the loss.
Mitchell will next play at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sunday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcats return to action with a trip to Milton, MA at Curry College on Monday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m.
