Gavin Nets Five Goals to Lead Women's Lacrosse at Curry
MILTON, MA - Junior midfielder Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA) scored five times to lead the Wheelock College women's lacrosse team in a 22-7 loss at host Curry College this evening at Walter M. Katz Field in Milton, MA. The Wildcats fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Colonels improve to 6-5.
Gavin has netted five or more goals in four of Wheelock's five games this season. Freshman midfielder Haley Lary (Randolph, VT) also provided the offense for the Wildcats with a pair of goals to go with a ground ball.
Curry netted the first four goals of the night, including a pair from freshman midfielder Alli Schoff (Berwick, ME). Gavin put the Wildcats on the board with a pair of unanswered goals to pull them to within 4-2 with 12:11 left in the first half. The Colonels responded with seven straight scores fueled by a pair of goals from freshman middie Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, MA) and senior defender Mel Brickley (Chelmsford, MA). Gavin broke the string with Wheelock's third goal of the evening to cut the deficit to 11-3 at the 5:05 mark of the opening half, before senior attacker Haley Carey (New Milford, CT) tallied two of the final three goals of the half for Curry for a 14-3 advantage at the intermission.
Brickley (three) and Carey (two) combined to score five of the first six goals of the second stanza to increase the Colonels' cushion to 20-3, before Lary scored for the Wildcats with 10:54 remaining in the match. The marker began a stretch that saw Wheelock score four of the final six goals of the contest, with Gavin scoring twice and Lary capping the night's scoring with 20 ticks remaining on the clock to make it 22-7.
Freshman goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, ME) stopped 23 shots to record 20-plus saves for the fourth time this season for the Wildcats, while sophomore Annie Douglas (Manchester, NH) turned away six shots for Curry.
Wheelock will be in action again on Thursday, April 10 when it travels to Paxton, MA to take on Anna Maria College at 7:00 p.m., while the Colonels head to Boston, MA on April 9 for a 4:00 p.m. tilt at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
