BOSTON, MA – Juniors Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA) and Molly Centore (Kennebunk, ME) combined to score eight goals to lead the Wheelock College women's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over visiting Becker College this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference match at Hedley Field on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Wildcats improve to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in NECC play, while the Hawks fall to 7-5 and 2-1.
Wheelock trailed 4-1 with 23:19 left in the first half, before reeling off four unanswered goals in just over four minutes, including two each from junior attacker Emma Marrs (Old Lyme, CT) and Centore to give the Wildcats a 5-4 edge with 19:05 showing in the first half. Becker reclaimed the lead when senior defender Jacqueline Chila (Monroe, CT) scored at the 17:07 mark and senior midfielder Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, CT) later followed with her 37th tally of the year to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead with 10:09 to play in the opening period. Gavin knotted the score when she scored during a player advantage to make it 6-6 with 3:44 left in the first half.
The teams were tied going into the break, but Wheelock seized the momentum in the second half with Gavin and Centore each scoring a goal within the opening four minutes of the contest to give the home team an 8-6 lead. Senior middie Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, NY) cut the deficit to 8-7 with one of her team-high four goals coming on a feed from senior attacker Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, NJ) with 23:30 to go in the half. It was as close as the Hawks got the rest of the way.
The Wildcats scored four straight goals, thanks to Gavin, senior midfielder Christina Cubera (Baltimore, MD), Centore and Marrs to take a comfortable 12-7 cushion with 10:42 remaining in the contest. Becker netted the final two scores of the game with Mossey scoring at 9:40 and sophomore attacker Kailee Ruyack (Beacon, NY) following at the 4:36 mark, but the Wheelock defense shut the Hawks down for the remainder of the match.
Dilkes put Becker on the board with the game's first goal just 61 seconds into the game, before junior Amy Giguere (Colrain, MA) followed with her second goal of the year at 28:40. Mossey tallied a pair of scores to answer Gavin's first score of the day for the Wildcats to give Becker a 3-1 record.
Centore and Gavin each racked up four goals and an assist for Wheelock, while Centore picked up a ground ball and won five draw controls. Gavin added a pair of ground balls and six draw controls. Marrs finished with three goals and an assist, while Cubera scooped up a ground ball as well.
Mossey also picked up three ground balls, won three draw controls and caused one turnover for the Hawks. Dilk finished with two points, including an assist
Freshman goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, ME) turned away 18 shots to earn the victory for the Wildcats, while sophomore Shelby Wicks (Shaftsbury, VT) made eight saves for the Hawks.
Wheelock will return to action tomorrow at noon vs. Rhode Island College. The match will be played at Winsor Field. Becker will host NECC foe Mitchell College on April 23 at 7:00 p.m.
