Gavin Nets Season-High Eight Goals to Lead Women's Lacrosse vs. Rhode Island College

BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA) tallied a season-high eight goals to lead the Wheelock College women's lacrosse team in an 18-14 loss to visiting Rhode Island College this afternoon at Winsor School Field in Boston.  The Wildcats fall to 3-6 on the season, while the Anchorwomen improve 6-5. 

The Wildcats owned a 6-3 lead with 7:04 left in the first half, before the Anchorwomen scored eight unanswered goals, including the final five of the first half to take an 8-6 lead at the intermission.  Junior midfielder Harmony Tillison (Cranston, RI) ignited the scoring outburst with the first of two scores during the stretch for Rhode Island College at the 6:19 mark.  O'Neill and junior attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI) followed with a goal each to pull the visitors even 6-6 with Wheelock at the three minute mark.  Freshman attacker Betsy Heidel (Warwick, RI) and Tillison scored the final two goals of the half to give Rhode Island College an 8-6 lead. 

Heidel and junior Danielle Landon (Wading River, NY) were undeterred by playing with a player down for the first two minutes of the second stanza for the Anchorwomen, while scoring the first two goals of the second half followed by another goal from O'Neill to take an 11-6 margin with 26:26 to play in the contest. Gavin broke up the scoring string with a pair of goals for the Wildcats to cut the deficit to 11-8 with 24:35 showing on the second half clock.  Rhode Island College responded with five straight markers, including a pair each from Ricci and senior attacker Ashley Appel to establish its largest lead of the day at 16-8 with 8:20 remaining in the match.  Wheelock wouldn't quit, though, scoring six of the game's final eight goals in the last seven-plus minutes of the contest.  Gavin scored the final three goals of her season-high eight goal effort, while junior midfielder Molly Centore (Kennebunk, ME) found the back of the net twice.  

O'Neill added four ground balls, three draw controls and a caused a pair of turnovers for the Anchorwomen.  Ricci and Tillison each came off the bench and ended the game with four points on three goals and an assist.  Appel came alive in the second half with three goals, while Landon and Heidel each racked up four points, including a pair of goals each.  Junior Lauren Maisano led the defense for the Anchorwomen with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Gavin was very active without the ball as well, scooping up a team-high seven ground balls for Wheelock, causing a pair of turnovers and coming up with five draw controls.  Centore topped all players in the match with nine draw controls to go with her seven points, including four goals. 

Senior goalie Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R) stopped nine of 17 shots on net in 47:26 of play for Rhode Island College, while Ashley Alardi (North Providence, RI) played the final 12:34 of the match and turned away three of nine shots that she saw on net.  Freshman goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, ME) was outstanding again between the pipes for Wheelock, making 23 saves for her fifth outing with 20 or more saves.    

The Wildcats will be in action again on Monday, April 21 when they travel to Longmeadow, MA to take on conference foe Bay Path College at 4:00 p.m., while the Anchorwomen host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on April 23 at 6:00 p.m.
