Macdonald Leads Women's Lacrosse Past RIC, 12-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Sophomore midfielder Collen Macdonald (Sandwich, Mass.) led the way for the Wheelock College with five goals and an assist as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-5 decision to Wheelock in a non-conference contest played at Alumni Field on Thursday evening. The Wildcats pushed their record over .500 to 6-5 while the Anchorwomen fell to 2-9.


RIC senior midfielder Betsy Heidel (Warwick, R.I.) scored a pair of goals while sophomore attacker Tess Bradley (Tiverton, R.I.) scored a goal and added an assist in the loss for the Anchorwomen.



Wheelock got on the board just 1:08 into the contest on an unassisted goal from sophomore attacker Alexa Mellis (East Longmeadow, Mass.). RIC junior attacker Allison Smedberg (Cranston, R.I.) answered with 27:43 left in the first half to knot the game at 1-1. The visiting Wildcats then closed out the half with three unanswered goals, which included two free position goals from Macdonald, to take the 4-1 lead heading into halftime. Wheelock held a 12-9 advantage in shots for the first half.


The Wildcats continued to control the action in the second half as Macdonald notched a pair of goals in the stanza to help propel Wheelock to victory. Wheelock outshot RIC by a 24-20 margin in the victory.


RIC sophomore goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, R.I.) made five stops in the loss. Wheelock senior goalkeeper Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine) made 11 saves.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Western Connecticut for a Little East Conference contest on Saturday, April 22 with a 1:00 p.m. start. Wheelock heads to Elms for a New England Collegiate Conference matchup at 4:00 p.m.
