Emma Wilson Leads the Wildcats in the New England College Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Wheelock College cross country traveled to Maine and competed in the New England Invitational on Saturday.  Freshman Riley Cushing (New Castle, Maine) led the way for the men's team, while veteran Emma Wilson (Hallowell, Maine) finished just ahead of her freshman teammate in the women's race.

Wentworth Institute of Technology won the men's 8k race with the Univeristy of New England and Endicott College coming in second and third.  In the women's 5k race, host University of New England won with Gordon and Worchester State finishing in second and third.

How It Happened - Men: The Wheelock men's cross country team competed in their first 8-kilometer race of the season.  In his second race of his college career, Cushing finished 17th overall with a time of 30:05.6.  Christ Genty (Revere, Mass.) would finish second among the Wildcats and 68th overall finishing in 32:44.9.  Mohamed Mohamed (Chelsea, Mass.) crossed the finish line in a time of 34:39.7 in 88th place.  

Colin Marie (Danvers, Mass.) would finish just behind Mohamed in 95th place in 35:51.8 and Matthew Boor (Carlisle, Mass.) finished with a time of 45:15.5 to finish in 131st place.  The Wildcats finished with a tenth place overall finish and a total of 271 points.    

How It Happened - Women: The Wheelock women's cross country team saw their top two runners crossing the finish line less than a second apart.  Emma Wilson (Hallowell, Maine) just edged out freshman Alexa Tivey (Lowell, Mass.) to finish with a time of 23:25.7.  Tivey finish her race with a time of 23:25.9.  The two runners finished in 62nd and 63rd. 

Monica Posada (Revere, Mass.) would finish a strong race in 90th place in a time of 25:47.2. 

What It Means: The Wildcats would see the men finish a strong race at their first 8k distance of the season, while the women saw both freshman Tivey and Posada have personal bests at the collegiate level.

Up Next: Wheelock travels to conference foe Mitchell College to compete in the Mitchell College Invitational on Saturday (10:00 a.m./10:30 a.m.)
